Come Ye Godless People Come

Today many people of the United States will celebrate Thanksgiving. While it is a secular holiday, many will give prayers of thankfulness to a deity. It is good to give thanks for help and kindnesses received throughout the year. It is right to reflect on the bounty we have and thank friends and family who share the meal we eat today.  No matter to whom you give thanks, I hope those celebrating this holiday have a wonderful day.  And a special thanks to my blogging friends around the world for the fun and wisdom they give.

To those who offer no prayers of thankfulness to a deity I share these words to a well-known tune.

Come ye godless people come
Raise the thought of reason home
Instead of faith use your brain
Speak the facts simple and plain
Truth will be our goal to seek
Stick together and don’t be weak
Come ye godless people come
Raise the song of reason home

All the world is nature’s best
Forget the gods and all the rest
We shall sow the thoughts of truth
We shall tend to them forsooth
First the myths must be weeded out
Then ideas of right will sprout
Come ye godless people come
Raise the song of reason home

Gods and lies have made us blind
Honesty will free the mind
Ideas of truth we shall reap
Uproot the false from the deep
Never fear what lies ahead
Fight the battle ‘gainst deceit instead
Come ye godless people come
Raise the song of reason home

  1. I was married for quite awhile to an atheist. My best friend, he’s gone now.We had great discussions on the subject. He never seemed to be able to pin me down. He’d ask me what my faith was and I’d say the Universe and he’d say, that’s not a faith and I’d say “How do you know? and this would go on and on – no winners. I believe that within each human being is a”something” that can guide them if they allow it, perhaps a spirit. Don’t have a clue just feel its in there. I am a science nut and organized religion scares the crap out of me, idols are after all just idols, all is speculation, so to feel good about oneself and “beliefs’ for me, I like the word semantics. Each persons “God” is particular to his or her own set of beliefs, whether learned as a child or decided as an adult, onto each his or her own. In the end Meme it does come down to what we each feel to be true. As it should be. Just my thoughts on the subject! Sorry it got so lengthy here!

    • I honestly don’t care what anyone believes. Unfortunately there are those who do care what others believe and force it on others. If only religion could be left to philosophers or discussions between people as you did with your husband. The problem is if it is learned as a child it is very hard to unlearn and decide differently as an adult. I read heart breaking stories of families being split apart over religion. I lost two good friends simply because I asked them to not send me emails about angels. Fortunately I did not receive strong indoctrination as a child but can usually answer all the Bible questions on Jeopardy before the contestants. lol So I must have learned something in Sunday School although I was usually whispering and giggling with a girl friend. I like knowing about different religions and cultures. I think I am as spiritual and feel in awe of the world as any, but I have to say there are some crazy things people believe out there. People who are otherwise rational and scientific think…..well just dumb things IMHO.
Am I a crusader about this? No! But I have found songs about it and I have written words to old songs about the corniness of believing silly things. I feel singing about it tells where I stand but doesn’t confront anyone.

Talk about being long winded. LOL

      • A pleasure to read your words. I would agree most especially with two parts of what you said: the cult like insanity of much of it and those who need to knock you over the head with it! lol

  2. This is a great post! And I really liked the song!! Thanks for that. Deities or not there really is so much to be thankful for, and my family and I enjoyed celebrating that. Glad to hear you had a good Thanksgiving.

  3. Interesting point! I didn’t know it was considered a secular holiday, given it is rooted in religious traditions. We Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October and then have a second Thanksgiving with our American cousins. It is one of those days that should be a daily tradition. One of my favourite quotes about thanksgiving is by Victor Hugo: “To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do. “ Happy Thanksgiving!!! All the very, very best!

    • A great quote and so true.
We had a nice day with 2 good friends. Days like that should never end and you are so right about the daily tradition.

The left overs will keep me in the Thanksgiving mode today. :)

  4. AnElephantCant help feeling disappointed
In Scotland we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving
    But at his advanced age
It doesn’t take too much courage
To give thanks for the fact he’s still living

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Meems, and to all the other non-u bloggers out there

  5. Have a great time, Meme. Enjoy the best this day has to give.

  6. I like the refrain of the song. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family :)

  7. I like your use of “forsooth” here…

  8. Happy Thanksgiving to you and to your family! :)
